Postoperative Instructions: Shoulder Arthroscopy with Subacromial Decompression/AC Joint Resection Arthroplasty

Range of Motion (ROM)

  • Sling Usage: Discontinue the sling as convenient for you.
  • Passive ROM: Begin immediately after surgery.
  • Active ROM: Start immediately after surgery.
  • Strength Training: Light strengthening exercises can commence immediately after surgery.

Movement

  • Flex and extend your elbow, shoulder, hand, wrist, and fingers three to four times a day to prevent stiffness.

Dressing/Bandages

  • Keep the surgical dressing clean and dry.
  • Remove the dressing 1-2 days after surgery and cover incisions with band-aids.
  • Showering is allowed but avoid direct water contact on the incision sites; use waterproof band-aids.
  • Do not bathe or submerge the shoulder until after your first post-operative check-up.

Temperature Monitoring

  • An elevated temperature up to 101°F in the first 2-3 days is normal. Contact your doctor if it exceeds this, or if redness or increased drainage at the incision sites occurs.

Medications

  • Nerve Block: Typically wears off within 18-24 hours post-surgery; expect reduced sensation in the affected arm.
  • Pain Management: Start pain medications immediately after surgery following this schedule:
    • Tylenol: 1 gram every 8 hours.
    • Naprosyn: 500 mg twice daily.
    • Aspirin: 81 mg twice daily, starting the evening after surgery.
    • Oxycodone: 5 mg as needed for pain every 4-8 hours, with options to reduce dosage over time.

Q: How soon can I remove the sling after shoulder arthroscopy?
A:
You can discontinue the sling at your convenience, as soon as you feel comfortable doing so.

Q: When can I start showering after the operation?
A:
You may shower 1-2 days post-surgery, but ensure the incision sites are covered with waterproof band-aids to prevent direct water contact.

Q: What should I do if I experience a fever after surgery?
A:
It's normal to have a slight fever for the first 2-3 days. If your temperature rises above 101°F, or you notice increased redness or drainage at the incision sites, contact your doctor.

Q: What is the pain medication regimen following shoulder arthroscopy?
A:
Start with Tylenol, Naprosyn, and Aspirin as prescribed. Use Oxycodone for severe pain but try to wean off it as soon as possible, particularly before physical therapy sessions.
